Horoscopes, printed or otherwise, have been around for ages. Hundreds of years, in fact. So what's with their continued draw? Many people read their daily horoscopes religiously. Different people have different reasons, and all are valid. Most everyone knows his “sign”: be it Aries or Virgo, Sagittarius or Taurus, or any of the other eight signs. The twelve zodiac signs set people apart and describe different personality traits in each person. Besides daily horoscopes, there are also birthday, weekly, and monthly versions.
Horoscopes to Escape from Reality The majority of horoscopes tend to trend toward the positive. No one wants to read a forecast full of doom and gloom, and the people who author the charts know this. Horoscopes generally offer a person an escape from reality or an unfortunate life.
The reader can imagine what is predicted and make up a whole fantasy surrounding that life. A financial windfall, a meeting with the perfect mate, a new career path...all of these things allow her to step away from reality, if only for a few moments. There's no need to get too depressed about one's life: after all, there's always tomorrow's horoscope!
Horoscopes for Entertainment Let's face it – horoscopes are entertaining! Who hasn't read their horoscope and chuckled over the outlandish predictions? Even the vague statements are amusing: “You will meet a dark, handsome stranger. ” Sometimes the funniest horoscopes are the ones that are just plain wrong. If you were a deep, thoughtful but shy type, you would find it amusing if your horoscope told you that you were a shallow party animal who loves to be the center of attention.
Most people read their horoscopes for amusement. Even when the person believes everything will come true, he still finds it a source of entertainment. In a world where people work hard and play less, horoscopes offer a step into distraction from the daily grind.
True Belief of Horoscopes There are some people who believe that every word printed in their horoscopes is true and will come to fruition, someday. These people see every prophecy as a possible turn in their road of life. They buy lottery tickets based on their lucky numbers, and go out of their way to avoid their unlucky ones.
These people are fixated on the accuracy of the predictions they read. If there is any way to interpret a predicted event as having occurred, they consider it a successful prediction. Even when the horoscope doesn't really “work,” they'll find a way to maneuver it so it fits.
All in all, people read their horoscopes for many different reasons, but most fall under the above-mentioned three categories. Whether for escape from reality, entertainment, or true belief, each person has his own justification for reading that daily, weekly, or monthly prediction. Most people will tell you that their personalities fit perfectly with their zodiac sign. Virgos will say they are perfectionist and obsessed with organization; Sagittarians will tell it like it is; and Taurans will be bull-headed and stubborn. Even when a horoscope is wrong, it's right – for someone.
